Joran van der Sloot Police Statement June 13, 2005

Observation of Joran that day, rather than an actual statement.

Book author's comment: This particular statement has been puzzling. The translation floating around had it as "Deepak came with two dogs." What is interesting is that the Kalpoe household has no dogs. And although Joran's family does have two dogs, Deepak wouldn't have had access to them. The "two dogs" translation doesn't seem to relate to anything in this case.

What seems more likely is that Joran actually said, "I called Deepak and he came with the Honda." The words, "twee honden" (two dogs), as written by the transcriber (deposition reporter), most likely was said by Joran as the similarly sounding "de Honda" (the Honda). Deepak's car was that silver Honda we heard so much about.

Interrogator:
I, Jan van der Straten, police chief with the Aruban Police Corps, state the following.

On Monday June 13th 2005, at approximately 13.00 hours I spoke informally with the suspect Joran Andreas Petrus van der Sloot at the police station in Oranjestad.

Interrogator:
Joran can you tell me what happened after the girl had fallen asleep on the beach near Fisherman's Hut?

Joran:
I called Deepak and he came with the Honda. I think he raped the girl and did something to her.

Interrogator:
Where is the girl buried then?

Joran:
I think that she was buried next to the wall of the Fisherman's Hut, for the rest I would not know either.

Interrogator:
Joran, would you please answer the following question with only yes or no? Was the girl thrown into the sea?

Joran:
No. I mean, I don't know.

Interrogator:
During the conversation Joran showed differing emotions. Sometimes he cried, sometimes he was direct in his answers.

Joran also indicated that he was very sorry for his family and that he had the best contact with his father.

Interrogator:
Why did you lie to your father about the Holiday Inn?

Joran:
I disappointed my father with that.

Interrogator:
Of this I reported on my oath as officer on June 17th 2005.

J. van der Straten
