Peter de Vries on Dutch TV

Dutch video of the show with Peter de Vries

The following was translated by reliable Dutch poster Marco, from Refugees Unleashed

VN: Yes, Peter, welcome, we're a week farther along, you had a tour in the US. When did you come home?

P: Yesterday.

VN: And everyday, one, two tv programs?

P: I did 7 on the busiest day, and now I just sit here.

VN: East coats and west coast?

P: No, only in New York.

VN: Only in New York, 7 talk shows only in New York?

P: I did Larry King, they tape that in California, I did not meet him myself. You sit in a broom type of closet, camera pointed at you, earpiece, he asks the questions, but I don't see him.

VN: I know you are critical, what was the best experience? Quality, journalistic?

P: ABC, that's the net work that bought my program, very professional run organisation, I was on Good Morning America, it's a very big "breakfast" program, very professional, everything is very well taken care of. I was disappointed at the quality of the American TV, technically they're behind, here in Holland we make better TV, technically that is.

VN: What was the worst experience? What was the dumbest question?

P: You really need to ask me that from here in Holland.

VN: What was the dumbest question from here in Holland?

P: I can't point out the dumbest question.

(Now the show a little bit of Larry King's show, Good Morning America, local NY station, Nancy Grace.)

VN: Was your English good enough? Do you think so? For me that would be difficult.

P: You have to concentrate, it's just not as easy as how we speak here. It's a little difficult to be VATREM but I was able to tell my story.

VN: You wrote in Algemeen Dagblad (a paper) and you have your own website, you wrote a book. and you write that the female hosts of the shows look so old.

P: Yes, the funny thing was, that when I arrived at the studio, and they introduced me, they would say: WOW, you look just like you do in your picture. And I thought, well of course I look like I do in my picture, but the hosts over there, in their picture they look about 10 to 12 years younger that they really do, like for example, if you meet Diane Sawyer she looks like a grandma, and in her pic. she looks like an attractive 40 year old.

VN: That's over here also, but we're more honest, it must be America.
It's been busy the last week.......Patrick van der Eem, he's new to us, you've known him for a while, we can't stop talking about this man, was your first impression not: What a weird dude.

P: Well this is a profession from different birds, when he first approached me, I was sceptical, let's see what you have to say, but he convinced me quick, because in my presence he called Joran, on the speaker, and I knew right the way, that these two have a very good contact. I knew then that I have to go with him.

VN: Everything worked out good, he did a good job, good conversations in the car, congratulations your way, but afterwards he was interviewed by P&W, and also on American TV, the impression he gives me that he's not for real.

P: What do you mean?

VN: Well let's look ................

(They show an interview with Patrick on American TV. *ABC*)

VN: It is your profession to smell something a 100 yards away, you're at it, but.........we came to the conclusion that he's a weird dude.....

P: No, I did not say that he's a weird dude, you said that....

VN: But afterwards he talked to the press, and I think: calm down, he did for our country what had to happen, and he's almost in tears on camera, then I think: Well.......he's playing, the American way.
I feel uncomfortable.

P: No that was real, not play, (P means not acting), don't forget that during all those months he was under enormous pressure, he's not a reporter, he's not a police man, he's just a guy, who all of a sudden is the main character in a world coupe, and that not leave him unaffected, there where moments that he thought, will this work, does it go wrong, he had to deal with instructions from us, and then all of a sudden the whole world press on top of you, and that affected him, and that's what you see here.

VN: You feel the uneasiness?

P: No, but I've known him longer than today, he's an emotional man, more guys are like that from that region, it's not a surprise for me.

VN: We are a week farther, we had hoped for news from the OM on Aruba, he can make the decision any minute if Joran is going to be rearrested or not, what do you think?

P: I can't look inside his head, I don't speculate about things like that, for myself, I think there are enough grounds to......um well have to wait and see.

VN: You wrote about the parents of Joran, you have the impression that the father of Joran, because of the story about the phone that was smuggled in to the jail, because of his status, he absolutely can't so this, has it been confirmed that this really happened?

P: He's the only one who can confirm this, his son has told us that story in the car, I don't see no reason not to believe that, I don't understand why he would charge his dad with a story like that if it's not true.
His father, so far, has said it's not true.
Why would he say that it is true? He might as well turn in his TOGA right away.

VN: I understand that, but what do you expect from the parents now? Because you had..............

P: I can't really understand their behavior. I was with them on P&W and they said: Our son could not have done that, we don't believe that, we raised him well, if we had any idea that he was guilty, we would bring him our self to the police. Well, I think now, you've seen the show, it would be a good idea to come to Holland, they did not do that, they should have a good conversation with their child, and say: well, child you now have said 10 times, you confessed 5 times, in 5 different conversations in a car, in a two week period, not one second......we now hear, well I was just joking, no we hear details, it's about time we went to the police, and don't hide behind the 5th amendment, you've done that in the past, now it's time to tell the whole story.
It amazes me that that did not happen .......

VN: Joran said: I was as stoned as kite in the car, you all saw it, I was rolling weed, that surprised me (the answer)

P: You (talking to the host) look like someone who has smoked a sticky before, yes.............ha ha

VN: In this book it says that you have a radar as big as .....how can you see that I have smoked a sticky before?

P: I feel that....ha ha

VN: You think I smoked more than you, or less?

P: I never smoked those, so you're the winner,.But the reason I asked is because there's a next question......Have you then afterwards solved all kinds of crimes?

VN: This is in Joran's defense, because you can see............

P: But there are also tapes of Joran, we picked him up at 12:00 in the afternoon at his grandma's house and he was sober, I do not assume that he became high on his grandma's sofa, so his sitting in the car, he's sober and the confessions from the day before, he repeats them, and adds more to them, and then, after all that, and no sooner, he asks is there something to smoke, so the whole story holds no water, it does not stand, also if you're stoned, you are not going to admit to unsolved crimes.

Question from the girl: Who long did you tape in the car?

P: 20 hours.

Question: Was it difficult to stop then? I can imagine that ......you could have heard more, you could have heard about the father.....when do you decide when to stop?

P: We noticed that he did not want to say more, there's also a border to how far can you go, how many times can you ask.
There's always a change of being found out, plus he had confessed 10 times, and he never took one thing back, he never came back the next day, and say something like: Oh man I was just joking, Never.

VN: Because of the show, there where new tips. This is also how you found Patrick. Are there new indications, I know you're not going to tell me, but are there new.......

P: I think that after the broadcast we received between 3000 and 3500 emails

VN: okay, so 90% disappeared in the trash, but.......

P: there are a few very interesting ones in there.

VN: Are they so interesting that you with certancy can say, there will be a part two?

P: Yes, for sure, there be a second part, not by me, but......

VN: what's the empty page? Look you say, he said, more than once that this is enough incrimination ......

P: And also all the other Suspicious circumstances that are already there.

VN: Have you never thought, she was already dead , is that not strange: all of a sudden she's dead, that's a strange story, do you believe that?

P: Well, it's difficult to think that a 19 year old girl, who might have had a little too much to drink, so acute to drop dead, that almost never happens, we assume that, because it's his story. But something else could have happened. He can change his story, but we don't know that.

VN: So this is a empty page, and you would love to write that page, would you not?

P: yes of course.

VN: And you need him for that or a helper (handlanger?)

P: For me the most important thing is that he confessed, he was there when it happened, the body disappeared, he kept quiet, always the 5t amendment, what in it self strange is, because if you're not guilty why be quiet? That's an indication.

VN: He did not help himself. Do you see an international career for your self now?

P: They did ask me that in America, it's an international case. Well, I have my hands full in Holland, I'm "nobody" in America, well a little someone, right now, I have no relations there, in Holland I do, people know me, I know people, I know the way, people come to me, over there in America I have nothing,
It is nice that there's interest in the documentary from America.

Last two minutes of interview were not translated.
