Beth and Jug got involved in politics in a foreign country, because she (and Jug) had decided early on that Joran and the Kalpoes were guilty based on what they thought was evidence. They knew that they needed a change in power to people who would process their information, accepting its authenticity.
Evidently, the operating theory was that after the election, new factions (those whom Jossy supported) would be running the police department and the prosecution, although appointed by the Dutch, could be influenced by a new power structure. Their hope was that the new group would accept their previously suppressed evidence and Joran and the Kalpoes would be prosecuted. In a court of law, corroboration is needed often to prove intent or culpability. Two pieces of evidence are generally needed to show that the one was not something which could be interpreted wrongly. Assuming that Beth Holloway didn't know the Kalpoe tape in Dr Phil's possession was phony, they possibly were hoping for two incriminating pieces for use by a new honest administration and police department for presentation in a trial. Plus, after the election lots more similar evidence might probably appear.
But, the cruel circumstances for them was that one of those pieces of evidence which they would have used turned out to be manipulated and that cast doubt on those confessions (which might, in fact, have been authentic).
What remains:
a.) The Joran "confession" documents (evidently there were several), where purportedly Joran describes raping and killing Natalee at his apartment, have been kept secret from any authorities. We assume that these were documents provided by the newspaper publisher, Jossy Mansur, based on Eduardo Mansur's admission concerning the provenance of the highly tauted first "confession." These documents were not shared with the police. Evidently they were waiting until after the election, which didn't result in a change of power.
b.) The bogus Deepak "confession" Skeeters interview was at first not turned over to the police, but aired on an internationally broadcast TV show with the announcement that it would be turned over to the police after the election.
c.) Beth Holloway has never revealed her confession documents publicly, although she has had full access to the media.
I am convinced that Beth and Jug are sincere in their belief regarding the guilt of the three young men. They have used any means necessary to get them charged and convicted. They relied on multiple documents which were provided to them which contained what they interpreted as confessions (from Joran and then Deepak). From what they thought was evidence, they made their unrelenting accusations in the media. Unfortunately for them, the Deepak "confession" turned out to have been manipulated and the elections didn't bring about a change of power. So they are left still holding those "confessions," which no one has used yet to bring anyone to trial.
